Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani has called on Swapo president Hage Geingob, to reveal the names of individuals suspected to be involved in corrupt activities.
Venaani’s request comes after President Geingob made remarks during the 7th Swapo congress that more people will be imprisoned for corrupt activities.
Speaking at the congress last Friday, Geingob stated that the party has a history of taking a strong stand against corruption. Geingob stated that it is the Swapo party led government that set up the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to lead the fight against corruption.
“We talk about corruption these days because we are taking action against it. If you hide it , nobody talks about it. Ministers are in jail and some may follow, we don't know,” stated Geingob at the opening of the congress.
Venaani challenged Geingob to release the names of the corrupt individuals.
“I want to call the President to the party, not because you are the President of Swapo, but as the President of our Republic. I want you to walk the talk. Release the names of those that are supposed to be in prison.If you do not release those names, you are cementing, you are qualifying our arguments, saying that Swapo is a kleptocratic regime, because the president can not say something like that in public domain and be taken on,” remarked Venaani.
Venaani also challenged the re-elected Swapo vice-president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to intervene in bringing the alleged culprits to book, saying that as a next candidate to run for the presidency of the country, she must as well release the names of the people.
Venaani further accused Geingob of allowing individuals who are implicated in corruption to serve in his cabinet, without facing consequences for such practices. He stated that it is evident that one main reason for Swapo to fail in implementing the whistleblower office is to cover up the acts of those individuals in public offices and conduct corrupt acts.
