A 28-year-old self-employed boilermaker is recovering at Katutura State hospital in Windhoek after he was caught in the middle of a shootout with security guards late Saturday afternoon at Okuryangava.

The man, Henock Shivolo, was shot with a pistol three times, once in the right leg and twice in the left leg. The security guard employed by Apache Security Services appeared in the Katutura magistrate’s court today and was granted bail of N$1000.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Shivolo, narrated that he went to buy meat and beers at a mini-market at Okuryangava with his cousin and friend on Saturday afternoon.

According to Shivolo, he intervened in the argument between his associates and security guard, which escalated into verbal insults. He stated that a security guard drew a pistol and fired shots at his legs. Shivolo was struck by three bullets, of which one is still lodged in his leg and is awaiting surgery. The self-employed boilermaker who is usually subcontracted by companies, stated that the injuries sustained will have an impact on his work because he is sometimes required to climb on roofs.

“I am hoping I will recover soon. But it will be difficult for me to climb, especially those of us who work on roofs. By climbing there up, you don’t know what is going to happen to your leg again. It is no more normal. But It really affect my life ” remarked Shivolo.

The security guard made his first court appearance in the Katutura Magistrate court on charges of attempted murder, discharge of firearm in a municipal area and negligent handling of firearm. The suspect is out on bail of N$1000 and his case was remanded to 23 March this year. The security also opened a case of common assault, crimen injuria and assault by threat.

Supervisor at Apache Security Services, Hellen Johannes, stated that Shivolo and his friends allegedly provoked the security guards because they wanted to buy alcohol but the liquor section was already closed.

Johannes further said that Shivolo’s associates allegedly punched a security guard, who felt threatened and drew his gun and shot at the three men.

“The boy came out of the car and punched the security guard's mouth. That is when the security guard took out a gun and shot at the three guys, because he felt threatened,” said Johannes.
