The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security headquarters has been named after the country's second president Dr. Hifikepunye Pohamba.
This was revealed today by President Hage Geingob during the official inaguaration of the new building located in Windhoek North at the corner of Hosea Kutako Drive and Harvey Street.
The Ministry relocated from its old building along Independence Avenue together with its Khomas regional office in northern industry to their new building in February.
"We are honoured to be joined by a very special guest, a liberation struggle icon, a freedom fighter, patriotic cadre and a renowned statesman. He is the man in whose honour this building will be named. He is none other than our second President, Comrade Hifikepunye Pohamba who was the first Minister of Home Affairs following the attainment of our independence in 1990," stated Geingob while adding that Pohamba was one of the first cohorts of cabinet Ministers and is fondly known as the gentle giant.
Geingob stated that the ministry has played an important role to ensure that no citizen is left out from obtaining a national identity for a sense of belonging.
The President also recognised former Home Affairs Minister, Pendukeni Ivula Ithana, who during her tenure played an instrumental role in the realisation of the construction of the building.
In his acceptance, Pohamba gave a history of the formative stages of the Home Affairs Ministry which he first headed when the country attained independence.
"I am profoundly honoured and pleased to be part of this important event today. As founding Minister of this institution, I have noted with appreciation and humility, that this building is being called Dr. Hifikepunye Pohamba. I accept this honour which is a recognition of the hard and important work that my pioneering team and I had carried out during the establishment of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration at the inception of our Republic, said Pohamba.
